It was 30 years ago that Peggy Pieczynski and a few neighbors built a bridge across a deep ditch, linking their back yards to the Illinois Prairie Path.

It also was one of dozens of heretofore ignored "encroachments" onto public land.

As increasing numbers of people built bridges, footpaths and created landscaping that spilled onto the prairie path, so grew DuPage County leaders' concern about the problem.

A year ago, county leaders sent letters to more than 100 property owners who have encroached on the trails.
