Elgin shaped them - as hometowns do.

One embraced the city. The other insulated himself, waiting for his escape.

But both agree Elgin is a big part of why they're musicians, on the brink of semi-stardom in the indie rock world.

David Strackany and Jesse Elliott graduated in 1999 from Elgin High, where Elliott says he thrived and Strackany says he brooded.

At Elgin High they formed a band with two other classmates; then parted ways when they left for college.

Now they're temporarily back together, in the midst of a national tour that will hit 21 cities in 21 days.

Strackany, who performs under the name Paleo, plays at least 15 instruments, from piano to acoustic guitar to the accordion.
