Growing up in Maywood and Bellwood, David Thomas lived in some tough neighborhoods.

He was bullied, beaten up and robbed of his money. Frequently he was late for school because he took a second bus to avoid the bullies.

Thomas decided to fight back - but not with fists. As a teen- ager, he took kids a few years younger than himself to the park to teach them to play football.
