HARRISBURG - Twelve-year-old Wayne Loftin stood barefoot on the plywood platform, gathering courage as he contemplated the clear pool of Willamette River water 10 feet below.

His father already had climbed the alder tree with him to make sure the water was deep enough, and to impart some timeless advice for using a rope swing: Be sure to let go.

Now Wayne leaned back, lifted the rope's waterski-style handle over his head and lifted his feet. He swooped high into the air over the water, a human pendulum, following his dad's advice at the peak of his arc. A baritone "Ker-PLUNK!" confirmed he'd hit the deep water of the swimming hole's sweet spot.

It's a scene right out of a Norman Rockwell painting, a classic way for rural kids to cool off on a hot summer day.
