After a year of steady overall growth, Alexander Forbes Ltd. is exploring a slew of changes that could alter the future shape of the world's ninth-largest insurance broker.

Those changes include a possible sale that would see the company delisted and returned to private ownership, and potential separate outside investment in the company's London-based International Risk Solutions division, which has resulted in the movement of the company's top management post back to South Africa.

Last month, Alexander Forbes announced it had received a number of unsolicited approaches from equity investors interested in taking the company private. It has been publicly listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange since 1996. As a result, the brokerage said it has appointed J.P. Morgan Equities Ltd. as an adviser to consider these approaches (BI, June 12).

Peter Moyo, who became group chief executive of Alexander Forbes on July 1, said the company still is in discussions with these potential new investors.
