Keep in mind, though, that we're talking a really big tree.
Humongous. Gargantuan.
BIG.
Here's a clue: We're talking trees so large that the nation's 10 biggest trees, stacked on top of each other, would be almost twice as tall as the Empire State Building. That's almost half a mile.
Statistics like these come from American Forests, a nonprofit conservation group based in Washington, D.C. The organization has been compiling a list of the nation's largest trees every two years since 1940 as a way to draw attention to them and to make sure people know the critical role they play in protecting the ecosystem, says Ethan Kearns, a fellow with the group's Global ReLeaf Center.
