If partisanship is the bitter fruit of political parties, should Oregon chop down the tree? A commission created to find ways of restoring the credibility of the Oregon Legislature thinks so, and has recommended a nonpartisan legislative body whose members would be elected in an open primary. Both reforms promise to reduce partisan rancor, but the consequences would have to be better understood before winning support.
