A little over a decade ago, the Bronx's Crotona Park was a burned-out shell of a neighborhood that few businesses could imagine entering. Residents trekked miles to Co-op City or Harlem to get plantains and other Caribbean foods that they liked.

On Friday, Pathmark opened the area's first supermarket, within the biggest commercial development project to be completed in the borough in more than 30 years.
