Bishop Anthony Pilla, once head of the U.S. bishops and a vocal advocate for peace and economic justice, will step down as leader of the Cleveland diocese. The Vatican accepted his early resignation April 4 and appointed as his successor Bishop Gerald Lennon, who previously served as interim bishop in Boston between the resignation of Cardinal Bernard Law and the installation of Cardinal Sean O'Malley.

Pilla, soft-spoken and with a reputation as a moderate, gained national recognition when he was elected president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (since renamed the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops), a post he held from 1995-98. However, his tenure in Cleveland was marred by the clergy sex abuse scandal and by an embezzlement scandal involving the diocese's financial officer. Possible legal entanglements will follow him into retirement.
