Bridgestone/Firestone (BFS) may close its 37-year-old Oklahoma City passenger and light truck tire plant by year-end, but both the tire maker and the United Steelworkers (USW) union have pledged to negotiate the plan.

BFS has advised the union local there it may close the plant on or about Dec. 31, citing global market forces that have made it "extremely difficult, if not impossible,'' to make the plant competitive once again, even with "significant''...
