Article Excerpt RAYMOND -- One hundred years ago, a group of Raymond-area business leaders knew it was time for the community to have a bank of its own. Largely ignored by the larger Jackson banks, families and business owners would benefit, they thought, from the presence of an independent bank committed to their unique financial needs. True to the concerns of the era, these bank organizers were committed to safety and security of the planned Merchants & Planters Bank, a hand-painted safe was designed, built and shipped to the Raymond Railroad Depot in 1903 a full three years before the Bank opened its doors for business.
Merchants & Planters Bank was formally charted on January 27, 1906 with the hefty investment of $25,000 for capital. J.L. Gaddis, Sr., George C. McLaurin, B.W. Griffith, Marye Dabney, R.L. Crook, W.W. Downing, C.S. Spann, Sr., S.S. Carter, H.S. Perkins and P.D. Ratliff formed the group of incorporators who were determined...
