Drew Irsfeld pitched like the ace that Churchill now needs on its staff.

The junior right-hander allowed four hits in a complete game as the third-ranked Lancers defeated North Eugene 8-2 in Midwestern League baseball at Churchill High School on Friday evening.

"Coming in, Drew wasn't sure if he was going to start or not and he did a fantastic job," Churchill coach Erik Hoberg said. "He's in the position now to be our No. 1 starter and he really stepped up."

The Lancers are keeping all-league pitcher Jerad Thompson off the mound for a while to rest his sore elbow, but Hoberg said he does expect Thompson to pitch again this season. Thompson was in the lineup at first base and had one of Churchill's 12 hits.

Shortstop Josh Hogan went 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple to lead the Lancers' offense. Hogan had two RBIs and two runs scored.

"We knew Jerad was not on the mound because he's hurt, so we wanted to give Drew as much run support as we could," Hogan said.
