It should be pointed out that the modernity in the title refers to a much longer period of time than the cover-picture suggests, the most obvious example being Jos, Arturo Saavedra's chapter on the incorporation of foreign words into Swahili poetry written between 1880 and 1907.
The plural, "Swahili Modernities" reflects not only the many forms in which modernity manifests itself on the East African Coast at various times, but also the diversity of approaches used by the contributors to...
