CORVALLIS - The born-again Oregon State women's distance program was largely invisible last season.

In its first year back since the OSU athletic department disbanded the men's and women's cross country and track and field programs in 1988, the Beavers were content to lay the foundation for the future.

They finished dead last in the Pac-10 cross country championships and failed to score a point at the conference track and field meet at UCLA. None of the seven OSU runners who competed in Los Angeles advanced to the West Regionals.

`We started and finished the year the way it should have been,' said OSU coach Kelly Sullivan, who was hired to help resurrect the women's program after a 17-year layoff. `We really shouldn't have beaten anybody or scored in the first year, but it was exciting for us to see how close we were.'

The Beavers still have a long road to travel.
