Players who put their foot to the ball are valuable specialists who are on the field for about 20 percent of the plays in a football game.

Many coaches insist these place kickers, punters and field goal kickers - key special teams players - amount to one-third of every game as far as total impact from start to finish.

Whatever the percentage, good teams need good kickers. It's as simple - and as difficult - as that.

That's why the Kicking.com Combine Series is appealing. It provides an opportunity for special teams players to showcase their talents.

A qualifying event in a national competition for special teams' players will be held at North Central College in Naperville May 21.

The event is part of the Kicking.com Combine Series launched this year by former NFL kicker Doug Brien.

The competition in Naperville is the only one in Illinois and is among 20 regional contests scheduled across the country for kickers, punters and even long snappers.
