THE AVAILABILITY OF ECONOMIC DATA
Economic analyses by city (or other small geographic area) rarely have been done in Arizona because of lack of geographically detailed economic data. In an effort to provide such data, the Arizona Department of Commerce contracted with the Center for Business Research to produce an economic report for each of Arizona's incorporated cities and towns. (The reports are available from the Department of Commerce's website: www.commerce.state.az.us. Upcoming issues of Arizona Business will include articles based on this study.)
Most economic data are available only as aggregated data by state and county, not allowing analyses at a community level. The primary exception is Zip Business Patterns, an annual product of the U.S. Census Bureau. Total employment and payroll are provided for most zip codes, but the only data released by industry is the number of establishments by broad employment categories. An estimate of employment by industry by zip code was developed by the CBR from the limited data included in Zip Business Patterns. Further, since zip codes do not correspond to city limits, the city data had to be approximated.
The collection of agricultural and government data to supplement the data in Zip Business Patterns proved to be highly problematic. The only source of geographically detailed agriculture data is the economic census conducted every five years. Data for 2002 are not yet available, so 1997 data were used. The zip code data available from the agricultural census, however, do not sum to the county totals,...
