Kristen Contos proved clutch once again.

Vernon Hills' junior forward scored the go-ahead goal in the second half, as the Cougars edged host Glenbrook South 2-1 to win the Titans' inaugural girls soccer tournament Saturday.

It was the second straight week that Vernon Hills (11-3-1 overall, 3-0 tourney) won a tournament. Contos' double-overtime goal against Latin enabled the Cougars to capture the title at Niles West the previous week.

Against Glenbrook South, Contos also scored Vernon Hills' first goal on an assist from Lauren Redig.

Vernon Hills, which defeated Resurrection 4-1 in its tourney opener Friday, started the day Saturday by shutting out Springfield 3-0.

Cori Beard, Kaitlyn Yule and Mallory Feece scored, while Allison Thoren earned the shutout.

"Springfield's pretty good, too, so we played well," Vernon Hills coach Vince DeLuca said. "It was a pretty solid tournament for us."
