PROJECT OVERVIEW
A Japanese/Saudi joint venture that teams-up SUMITOMO CHEMICAL and SAUDI ARAMCO is currently involved in the development of a $9,800,000,000 petrochemical complex in Saudi Arabia. In so doing, the partners recently awarded a construction contract for planned polymer plants to an international consortium led by Italy-based TECNIMONT SPA. The other companies involved in the project include SUMITOMO CHEMICAL ENGINEERING of Japan in conjunction with the local AGGAD INVESTMENT CO. (AICO) and TECHNIMONT ARABIA.
According to the terms of the award, the partnership will be responsible for the provision of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) as well as commissioning services. Construction plans call for building: - Two 350,000 metric ton per year (mt/y) polypropylene (PP) lines that will be based on Sumitomo Chemical's technology; - A 250,000 mt/y easy processing polyethylene (PE) unit; - A 350,000 mt/y high-density polyethylene (HDPE) facility based on Basell process technology; - A 50,000 mt/y butene-1 plant based on a process supplied by Axen.
The cost to complete the undertaking, by mid-2008, has been estimated at $1,000,000,000.
TECNIMONT employs a total staff of about 2,100 and operates as a holding company. The group is engaged in the provision of engineering and construction services for the oil and gas, petrochemical, basic and fine chemical, pharmaceutical and fertilizer industries.
