College students don't just go to school, study and party on campus. They also dine and drink at local eateries and constitute a vital consumer group for businesses surrounding the area's campuses.

"It's a wonderful marketplace, you can't find any marketplace around a campus that doesn't do well," said George Whalin, founder of San Marcos-based Retail Management Consultants.

According to San Diego State University's Web site, the college had 31,802 students enrolled for the 2005 fall semester. The start of a new school year brings a perfect opportunity for businesses around the area to attract those students.

Beat Wick, founder and owner of the Living Room Coffeehouse, an eatery and coffee shop about a half-mile from SDSU, said the students help keep his business flourishing.
