It was announced today that the Occupational Pensions Regulatory Authority's (Opra's) strategic policy director, John Ashcroft has been appointed first President of the International Organisation of Pensions Supervisors, (IOPS). His term as President will be for one year.

IOPS was established in Paris on 12 July 2004, at the instigation of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's network of pensions supervisors and regulators. IOPS aims to set international standards on pension supervisory issues.

On his appointment, John Ashcroft commented: "I am glad to have been offered this important post at a time when the supervision of pensions is taking an increasingly international dimension.
