The Department for Transport has today published National Statistics about the travel habits of residents of Great Britain. The main findings include:

* On average, Great Britain residents travelled 6,800 miles in 2003.

This was an increase of 6 per cent in the 10 years since 1992/1994, reflecting a 13 per cent increase in the average length of trip from 6.1 miles to 6.9 miles.

* The average number of trips made in 2003 was 1,000 per person per year, a fall of 6 per cent in the last 10 years.

* The average time spent travelling around Great Britain has remained at about 360 hours per person per...
