Article Excerpt Drain commissioner: Detroit to buy radios with sewer money
Oakland County Drain Commissioner John McCullough on March 13 filed a formal complaint with U.S. District Court in Detroit stating funds were being allocated from Detroit Water and Sewerage Department customers to pay for a $131 million radio system, according to a news release.
The radio system would be used primarily for police, fire and emergency medical services within the city of Detroit, so it should be paid for from the city's general fund, not suburban water customers, McCullough said.
George Ellenwood, DWDS public affairs director, said the department was paying only for its share of the project, which would be used to support its customers, not only in Detroit, but in the eight surrounding counties as well.
The court has not yet set a date to hear the matter, the news release said. There will be a settlement conference at 2 p.m. April 6 for the attorneys only.
The filing comes on the heels of a vote March 10 by Detroit City Council approving price hikes for both city and suburban residents later this year. Earlier in the week, the council had voted...
