It is accepted wisdom that ADHD is a social phenomenon. The stigma of drugging one's child is stressed, while drug companies are represented as villains profiting from the quick-fix ethos of a chemical-dependent Western society. But the current weight of opinion counts for little to parents of a child diagnosed with ADHD.

By the age of four, my son's frantic internal schedule apparently prevented his adequate appreciation of the constraints of space and time. Experiences seemed to crowd his consciousness without being filtered and prioritised. Skittling through life amid a trail of chaos and tears, he too often failed to anticipate the consequences of his actions before it was too late.
