The recent upper house ruling on RU486 (a drug that induces a 'medical abortion') follows a period of intense public debate in which many people seemed to interpret the bill as determining whether Australian women should be allowed access to the drug. In reality, it wasn't about this at all. The bill was a proposal to remove RU486 from the category of 'restricted goods'. Restricted goods are defined under the Therapeutic Goods Act (1989) as medicines 'intended for use in women as abortifacients'. Goods in this category require Ministerial approval before they can be evaluated, registered, listed or imported into Australia. Being placed in this category effectively 'bans'...
