Kathy Mattea is enjoying that delicious time of life when she doesn't need to worry about her career anymore. She's been a top-of-the-chart country singer. She's been the darling of Nashville's left-wing country scene.

Now Mattea, who plays Tuesday night at the Shedd, has time to take a deep breath, and she finds herself drawn more and more to education.

"I love what I am doing," she said in a recent phone interview from Nashville. "I have a nice balance in my life. I have a great band. I get to play in these great theaters and still have enough room in my life to have a life outside of work."

That work, recently, includes teaching classes at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
