Federal lawmakers on Thursday announced a way to ensure that Uncle Sam keeps making crucial yearly payments to Lane County and other counties across the country.

In a belt-tightening move, the Bush administration wants to cut funding to the so-called county payments program by 60 percent, said U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore.

The money is compensation for the presence of federal timber lands that the counties can't tax. Lane County, among the top recipients, gets about $50 million annually.
