History lost at Log Cabin Inn

Our grandfather was a murder victim at McKenzie Bridge in 1919. When my dad was just 7 years old, he and his younger sister had their father taken away from them by a disgruntled former employee - shot in the back on a deer hunting trip on Scott Mountain.

Although my grandmother and her two young children had to leave their homestead on King Road for a teaching job at Dunn School in Eugene, the McKenzie Valley was always a special place for them.

My parents stayed at the Log Cabin Inn in 1987 for their 50th wedding anniversary. While there, my dad asked if he could sit down and look through the historic guest book of the inn. After scanning through the hundreds of names from the early years, he found just what he hoped he might find - the guest signature of his father, Charles Lincoln Taylor.

He laid down his head and wept.

The Wednesday fire at the Log Cabin Inn at McKenzie Bridge destroyed not only a part of our family's story, but a landmark that was a centerpiece for the history of the whole McKenzie Valley and eastern Lane County. We lament its loss.
