As national lawmakers remained divided this week over how to handle the nearly 12 million immigrants living in this country illegally, a survey released Thursday found public opinion similarly split on the issue.

Chicago is no exception.

An estimated 39 percent of the 801 Chicago-area residents contacted in the national survey said immigrants who came here illegally should be allowed to stay, a view that surpasses the national average in its tolerance.

Just one in five Chicago area residents ranked immigration as a big problem. Nearly two-thirds said the influx of immigrants has not affected local services, be they school quality...
