Article Excerpt North Suburban Lake
Lake Zurich
Coach: Lance Pacernick (fourth year)
Last year: 3rd in Fox Valley
Key losses: Allie Corby (distance); Jackie Gridley (throws).
Top returnees: Senior Amanda Glow (middle distance), Senior Lindsey Polinko (hurdles, pole vault, hurdles), Senior Kelli Peters (jumps), Senior Rylee Christensen (sprints), Senior Jackie Brown (sprints), Junior Jenny Foggia (distance), Junior Jen Ewan (distance), Senior Natalie Zarinana (sprints, long jump), Junior Emma Degen (throws), Junior Kara Buffardi (throws)
Promising newcomers: Freshman Olivia Allen (sprints), Freshman Erika Powers (distance), Sophomore Kimmy Schofield (sprints), Sophomore Stephanie Laidlow (pole vault, long jump, sprints), Sophomore Paige Glow (high jump, hurdles, middle distance).
Outlook: First of all, Pacernick couldn't be happier about the switch to the North Suburban Lake for one simple reason. "A lot shorter bus rides," he said. All kidding aside, Lake Zurich is new to the conference but the teams they will now be facing are usually ones they saw plenty of times during previous years, whether it be invitationals or sectionals. Another thing the coach likes is the scoring in the NSC. "It'll also be nice with the dual meets during the week because the points count toward winning the division," he said. "This is a highly competitive conference. The challenge will be to go after Lake Forest, which has been the long-standing conference and sectional champ." And the Bears have plenty of firepower when it comes to competing in the NSC, and possibly challenge the Scouts for some of that supremacy. For starters, Glow returns. She was 11th in the state in the 800 run last spring. Her pole vaulting success in the FVC should also carry over, as last year she broke a long-time Fox Valley record in that event. Polinko helps solidify the field events as she won the pole vault at the FVC meet last year. Glow's sister, sophomore Paige, will add to the depth by competing in the high jump, hurdles and middle distance events. Two of the Bears' relay teams, the 4x4 and 4x8, will get a good tune-up this weekend when they compete in the unofficial state meet in Champaign. "They have already run close to outdoor- qualifying standards," Pacernick said. Christensen, Amanda Glow, Polinko and Brown serve as captains on a team that features solid leadership with 10 returning seniors.
