Carol Fox and Ardis Krainik set the standard in Chicago as legendary leading ladies of American opera management, but Sarah Caldwell deserves mention in their company.

And like the Chicago legend the late Margaret Hillis, Caldwell shared a passion for conducting.

Caldwell excelled at both these male-dominated jobs, through sheer will and perseverance.

For three decades, she kept Opera Company of Boston alive, overcoming severe financial and logistical obstacles.
