A quick glance at last year's all-league baseball team shows where the strength of the Midwestern League will be this season.

"I think this is the year of the pitcher in the league," South Eugene coach Cole Nagler said. "All the way up and down there are good pitchers, and it's going to be a great league season for that reason. There will be great pitching matchups throughout."

Ten of the 12 pitchers who earned all-league honors last year are back, including all three first-team starters.

"The pitching is the best I've ever seen in this league," said Thurston coach Chris Vermeer, who graduated from North Eugene in 1997. "I'm not too far removed from playing and I've followed the league closely since then, and this is the best group of pitchers I've seen come through in a long time."

Leading the way are Churchill's Jerad Thompson, North Eugene's Jon Keller, South Eugene's Michael Ward and Sheldon's Alex Besaw, and it's no coincidence that those four teams...
