The Government laid proposals before Parliament today which will amend the Agricultural Holdings Act 1986 and the Agriculture Tenancies Act 1995 in order to provide a more flexible framework for agricultural lettings. The amendments will also remove some of the barriers to tenant farmer participation in diversification activities.

The proposed amendments to legislation are being taken forward by means of a Regulatory Reform Order and, if adopted, will:

* Remove the requirement for a potential successor to a tenancy to earn a living primarily from agricultural work on the holding.
