On the 23rd of November the Czech bass clarinettist Josef Horak died in Biberach-Riss in Germany. I cannot and do not wish to write his obituary, but I have a need to respond with at least a few words to the death of a Czech musical personality par excellence.

I first met Josef Horak at the beginning of 1960 in Brno, where he was already known as an outstanding clarinettist who was raising the status and broadening the possibilities of play on the bass clarinet. Horak had also had a spell with Gustav Brom's orchestra, the hatchery of European jazz instrumentalist, whether saxophonists, trumpet players or trombonists.
