Editor's Note: I'd seen the original movie, and I saw the re-release on DVD all these years later, marveling at how stunning the aerial shots looked in vivid color, and also at how dated the fashions, dialog, and aviation technology portrayed in the movie actually appeared in today's slick digital world. The big surprise, however, was in the reaction of so many friends and acquaintances who'd seen the digitally re-mastered movie when it played on the Arts & Entertainment channel as a promotional effort several weeks before the special two disc DVD set was released. I personally took great delight in seeing the reaction and hearing the positive commentary from so many good friends in the aviation business. The half-century-old film had indeed touched our hearts and rekindled old memories of a charming and bygone era in commercial aviation.

The big surprise lay ahead, however, when I was asked to host a screening of the film during the annual 'movie night' meeting of my local EAA chapter. The audience members represented every generation of aviation buff including seasoned veterans, young test pilots, and even the proverbial 'new kids' who had yet to get their ears wet. Many wives joined the crowd as well, proving that this was more than just another 'airplane movie'. It was a movie that touched the hearts and minds of all who saw it, for there had to be some character in that motley bunch of passengers with whom we could identify. Quite obviously times had changed, and suppressed laughter could be heard at some of the more dated dialog. Seeing passengers smoking and using butane lighters while inflight also drew comments, but the most revealing aspect of the generational shift that had occurred in the 50-plus years since the movie was first released was...
