Article Excerpt In the popular and business press, women have been repeatedly said to receive higher 360 evaluations than men, make better managers (supposedly because of superior interpersonal skills), and perform better because they are rated higher.
Is any of that true?
Since 1993, we have collected 360, performance, and potential data on men and women individual contributors, managers, and executives.
Past gender research has typically found few real differences in performance. Women may have to perform slightly better to get to the same level as men, and are more participative and attuned to others. Men rate slightly better at common problems-solving skills and in business acumen. Rating biases (women rating women higher and vice-versa) are small to non-existent. This is not to...
