Growing up in Burlington, Conn., David Maron's childhood was shaped largely by his dad, Adolph Maron, a German immigrant who arrived in the U.S. in 1951 as a penniless 22-year-old.

After learning a new language, becoming a U.S. citizen, working 12-hour days while attending night school, Maron's dad started his own small business in the 1960s. When Maron was eight years old, rather than give him an allowance, his dad took him to construction job sites where he was paid 25 cents an hour to pick up trash.

"He taught me honesty, responsibility, to take pride in my work, a strong work ethic and to be grateful to have been born an American," said Maron. "I continued to work for him weekends and each summer through my teenage years --at a substantially higher hourly wage to be sure--ultimately supervising...
