Going to work this midnight, I enter the bridge of Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 knowing that five days of relative tranquility on a crossing from Southampton to New York have ended. In contrast to the isolation of the open Atlantic (once nicknamed Cunard's Pond), we are now less than four hours from picking up the New York pilot.

As the QM2's second officer, I am in charge of one of the three navigational watches, assisted by a third officer and a quarter master. During the eight hours a day we are on watch, we are responsible for the safe navigation of the vessel, making sure that the QM2 remains on track in deep water and maintains a safe distance from any passing traffic. Working with our colleagues in the engine room, we adjust the ship's speed to ensure a timely arrival while also monitoring all the safety systems around the vessel.
