Americans possessed of the idea that European ballet companies enjoy perpetual financial prosperity should talk to Espen Giljane, who, since 2002, has been artistic director of the Norwegian National Ballet.

"In Norway, people think that sports are the performing arts," says the ex-New York City Ballet dancer in his cramped office in Oslo's Den Norske Opera. "We're one of the richest countries in the world. Yet, we're all still fighting to get one percent of the national budget directed to the arts."
