TOLL PROCESSORS--companies that process other people's metal for a fee--are a critical link in the supply chain. They apply their technology and expertise to customers at all levels, from mills, to distributors, to original equipment manufacturers.
Traditionally, toll processors have served as the processing arm of the mills, leveling, cutting, blanking, slitting, warehousing and shipping metal bound for large OEM customers such as auto and appliance makers who buy their steel mill-direct.
More recently, toll processors have gotten additional business from OEMs looking to cut production costs by outsourcing more of their first-step manufacturing operations.
