Recently, someone very close to me underwent a minor cosmetic surgery procedure. She had developed a handicapping social phobia about what she perceived was her overwhelming physical defect. After her surgery she is much more confident and is no longer suffering from social phobia or engaging in avoidant behaviors to hide herself.
