A failed idea to charge Eugene residents and businesses a special fee for street repairs is moving again at City Hall.

At the urging of the city staff, councilors on Monday agreed to resuscitate a financing proposal tried four years ago to raise money for filling potholes and resurfacing streets.

"Fix the pavement," Councilor George Poling said, "that's what I have been hearing from people."

In the same meeting, councilors shot down a pair of other ideas to raise money to reduce the city's growing backlog of street work, estimated at $102 million. That left the assessment on homes and businesses as...
