Churchill's improbable run came to an abrupt end Saturday.

The Lancers, who were crowned Midwestern League champions for the first time in 13 years this season, dropped a 48-39 decision to visiting Grants Pass in the third round of the Class 4A girls basketball playoffs.

The victory sends the Cavemen to the eight-team state tournament at the Chiles Center in Portland next week - their first trip since 1981.

`We didn't want it to end here,' Grants Pass coach Robert Lingo said. `Our goal for the last two weeks has been to make it to the Chiles Center.'

The Lancers (19-7) had similar thoughts in mind.

After wrapping up the conference title on the final day of the regular season, they squeaked out a two-point win over West Albany in their first playoff game, and came into Saturday's contest with plenty of momentum....
