Jewel Hult
A memorial service will be held March 1 for Jewel Hult of Bakersfield, Calif., formerly of Eugene, who died Feb. 22 of age-related causes. She was 90.
Hult was born Feb. 22, 1916, in Kamloops, B.C., to Lawrence and Winifred McKay Bauman. She married Nils Hult on Aug. 7, 1928. He died Feb. 1, 1985.
Hult moved with her family to Oregon when she was 2 years old. She lived in a number of communities in Western Oregon where her parents owned and operated lumber mills.
She attended the University of Oregon and lived in Lane County for 80 years. She was active in the Eugene Symphony Guild, served on the board of United Way of Eugene, was president of the Assistance League of Eugene, and belonged to the local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.
Through the Eugene Arts Foundation, now the Arts Foundation of Western Oregon, Hult and her husband contributed about $3 million to help build the Hult Center for the Performing Arts and to establish a permanent endowment to assist both the Hult Center and local performing arts organizations.
She enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. She attended United Lutheran Church in Eugene.
Survivors include five daughters, Linda Strait of Portland, Jane Ohlemann of Redmond, Gretchen Pierce of Eugene, Carol Lee of Lake Oswego and Victoria Hollenbeck of Bakersfield; a brother, Barry Bauman of Eugene; 10 grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren....
