He showed them how to love music. He inspired them to love each other. He taught them to love themselves.

So on Saturday, graduates of Paul Magnusson's Maine West High School choir thanked their ailing former teacher the best way they knew how.

Packed shoulder to shoulder in his Des Plaines living room, their eyes at times clouded with tears, they sang his praises.

They hadn't seen each other in years, some never knew each other at Maine West, and the rather impromptu rehearsal, held at a church beforehand, wasn't even two hours long.

But the tear-jerking reunion concert, inspired by Magnusson's battle with pancreatic cancer, was their way of giving back to a teacher they call "Mr. Mag" - someone they say made them who they are today.
