Athletic trainers are unique health care providers and can be found in a variety of work settings.

The athletic trainers specialize in the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses.

In a matter of seconds, it seems, an athletic trainer is rushing to help when someone is hurt during one of our high school activities.

It wasn't always this way. Years ago, coaches had only basic first-aid skills and were needed to help when injuries developed. They had so many other things to think about that "inconsequential" injuries might be ignored.

Today, the National Athletic Trainers' Association supports the more than 30,000 members of the athletic training profession through education and research.

These women and men deserve to be honored, and that's what is about to happen.

"Be Active - Stay Healthy" is the theme for National Athletic Training Month that kicks off Wednesday.

The month of March is designed to advise active people on how to prevent injuries at work and at play.
