SUDAN - After The Peace Agreement.

Article Excerpt Oil fuelled a decades-long civil war in the south which left more than 2m dead and at least 4m people dispossessed. But exploiting those vital reserves has also become a matter of urgency since the January 2005 peace agreement. State Minister for Energy, Ms Teny, on Feb. 13 told the Dubai conference: "Oil is driving the economy. The government of southern Sudan is relying on oil revenue to sustain peace and realise development programmes". In turn, peace will facilitate access to the vast country's 21 oil blocks, only seven of which are currently producing (as explained above). A further two blocks are under negotiation. Sudan is now courting foreign investors to help exploit those reserves.
