Context

What is a membrane? In the simplest of terms it can be defined as a barrier between two environments. What use do membranes serve in our society? Household items such as towels, napkins, sponges, and paper are good examples of membranes.

This activity encourages critical-thinking skills and creativity by asking students to create and design an abstract scientific concept. The focus is on the student's ability to visualize the concept and then design, construct, and test their creation. The goal here is twofold: (1) students understand the concept of membranes, and (2) students understand the fundamental concepts in engineering design.
