Organisations are under increasing pressure to reduce costs and protect the environment. Energy can be costly and harm the environment. All organisations use it, and many see it as a 'fixed cost' that cannot be reduced. However, there are ways in which the amount of energy used can be reduced, leading to savings, and a successful energy management scheme can produce benefits both for the organisation and the environment.
A further incentive to become more energy efficient is the introduction in April 2001 of the Climate Change Levy (CLL), which taxes the use of energy by business. In certain cases, tax discounts are available for specific sectors.
