Every semester at the University of Tennessee, a colleague in the Philosophy Department invites me to play the devil's advocate in her introductory class. I mean that almost literally, since many of these students have never seen a live atheist, and some have to be persuaded not to walk out of the classroom when I come in. I try to sport my most charming Italian accent and convince them that I'm unlikely to have eaten any babies for breakfast, but then I get to the business of challenging their minds. After all, philosophy is all about critical thinking.
