As the major chords of the battle over Mel Gibson's Gospel-porn movie The Passion of the Christ were beginning to die away, I was abruptly struck by a minor one. During the scene in which the limbs of Jesus are being bloodily impaled on the cross, I was intrigued to learn, the hands that we see wielding the hammer are the hands of Gibson himself. Sometimes an actor who wants to direct, and sometimes a director who wants to act, Gibson could not keep himself from playing some part in the bloodiest story ever filmed.

Nor was this just a modest adoption of manual labor (or perhaps humble carpentry) on his part.
